Welcome to Year 6 - Joseph Wright Class
Year 6 is an exciting year of learning, challenge and independence.
Our classroom is a bright, welcoming space in which we take pride in our learning.
In Joseph Wright Class, the teacher is Miss Jones with TAs Mrs Hall and Mrs Ward.
Year 6 Folders (with Reading Books and Reading Records inside) must be in school every day.
PE is on Mondays (Group A), Wednesdays (Group B) and Fridays.
Your child’s PE kit should be in school from Monday to Friday and taken home over the weekend to be washed.
Weekly Spellings are handed out on Fridays to be tested the following Friday.
Weekly Homework is handed out on Fridays and due in the following Wednesday.
Homework consists of 1 x Maths, 1 x Reading and 1 X SPAG (totalling one hour) and is your child’s responsibility. Incomplete homework will be completed during Wednesday and Thursday Consequence Times. Homework is self-marked and assessed.
What will Year 6 be learning?
This half-term, we are investigating the sinking of RMS Titanic in 1912. Year 6 will be learning about the events leading up to the famous sinking and developing a range of writing genre including recount texts, newspaper reports and explanation texts.

In Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar, we will be continuing to revise word class as well as introducing new grammatical features relating to sentence structure and tense.
In maths, we are starting the year with Place Value up to 10,000,000 alongside continuing to practice and revise the four main calculations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Our topic for Autumn 1 is ‘Why is the weather so wild?’. We will be investigating extreme weather from thunder and lightning to avalanches and tornadoes. In our topic lessons, we will be creating models of extreme weather, conducting research through textbook and ICT and investigating the impact severe weather has on the world.
This half-term’s Topic Homework Project is to: create a 3D model of an extreme weather or create a scientific poster of one example on extreme weather in detail.
Homework projects are due in on Monday 2nd October.

Science this half-term is space – we will be answering our big question: ‘Will we ever send another human to the moon?’. In this topic, we will be investigating the planets, how day becomes night, and researching modern space discoveries including Tim Peake’s recent journey on the ISS. Our maths focus in Science this half-term is statistics.
